of Bur Calvert of Abbeville South Carolina
Generation No. 1
1. BURR CALVERT, hereafter referred to as HARRIS was born 1728 in Northumberland County, Virginia, and died 08 Mar 1787 in Newberry District, South Carolina. He married MARY JEAN HAYNIE 1757 in Northumberland County, Virginia, daughter of MAXIMILLIAN HAYNIE and LURANAH FALKNER. She was born Abt. 1744 in Northumberland, Virginia, and died 1786 in Newberry District, South Carolina. Prior to moving from Prince William County, he wrote a letter stating he would not be buried in the family Cemetery so as to avoid offending other family members according to David Bell of Tomball Texas who found this letter among papers at Fairfax County Courthouse in 2002(hold me to this—I need to find what this document was-DEB). Among the Descendants of Burr Harris is the story that Burr’s Departure from Prince William County to Newberry or to
Northumberland where he married Jean Hanie, was amidst turmoil and an apparent family dispute.

In 1995 Dorothy Gray Christoffersen wrote " Then our ancestor, Burr Calvert alias Harrison, fell out with his family, so the family story passed down to the South Carolina Calverts alias Harrison-Harris states. 'He picked up his skirts and after selling his land moved to Newberry County, South Carolina, where Captain William Dawkins, Sr., his son-in-law, lived.' Captain William Dawkins Sr. had also lived in Stafford County, Virginia as a boy and in Prince William County, Virginia as a young man. He had married Mary Calvert alias Harrison, daughter of Burr Calvert alias Harrison alias Harris and Jean Haynie. Mary died probably just before William Dawkins left for South Carolina. In fact that my have spurred him on to leave Prince William County, Virginia. I do not know the truth. Sometime after Burr Calvert alias Harrison settled in Newberry County he became known as Burr Harris and his male line still today carries the name of HARRIS instead of the extremely renowned name of CALVERT. Unless by some chance they have become interested in their genealogy, I wonder if they know of their heritage?"
(This is the best explanation that I have found to explain the reason that Burr change his name. B.F. Harris, July 2003)
Mrs. Lois Scheck Pitts, a descendant of Burr's son, Micajah, says that Burr (Calvert) Harris came from Virginia in 1772 and bought part of an original land grant of Jeremiah Williams. He acquired the other part of the grant in 1773. Her house now 180 years old was used as a hospital during the Revolution and is now occupied by Mrs. Pitts. In the family cemetery behind the house is buried Burr Harris.
July 21, 2003 - This Cemetery (Called locally "The Harris Family Cemetery") is located at SC Hiway 34 and Marys Drive. From the intersection of I-26 and SC Hiway 34 go Northeast on SC-34 approximately 2.7 miles to Marys Drive; turn right about 200 feet and on the right side there is an overgrown Plot (almost unrecognizable from the road) which is the fenced area of the cemetery. There are a few marked graves and a few that are marked by field stones. I talked with the man who lives next to the cemetery and he seemed to remember someone being buried in the cemetery in the 1960's. He has lived in the area all of his life and remembers the "Old Harris House." He said it was a big two story home of wood. (Plantation Style). It was situated across Hiway 34. The Hiway was built between the House and the Cemetery. B.F. Harris

Notes for THOMAS ALSTON HARRIS:
Obituary:
Thomas A. Harris, a pioneer citizen of Henderson county, was born near White House, Smith County, Texas, on September 22, 1860. When four years of age he came with his parents of Henderson county, settling in the old Oak Grove community near Baxter. Here he grew to manhood and in 1882 was married to Miss Octavia Davis, who died in 1888, leaving three children, all of which died.
In 1895 he was married to Miss Caroline Powell, and to this union were born ten children, six boys and four girls. he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Caroline Harris and children, Earl, Frank. Osie. Hubert, Homer, Bonner and Miss Florence Harris, and Mrs. Lela Corder, Mrs. Charles A. Muckleroy and Mrs. Wilbur Urquhart. He is also survived by a half brother, Frank Matthews, who resides at Post Oak and a half-sister, Mrs. Frank Davey, who resides in Fort Worth.
Thomas A. Harris joined the Methodist Church in boyhood and remained a member of this church until his death. He did not take much interest in public affairs, preferring to devote his interests to his family and the sacred precincts of his home. Perhaps few men loved home and its environs more than did he. I knew him to be a man who attended strictly to his own affairs and refrained from molesting the affairs of others. He detested oppression and shams of every kind but loved the generous with a heart sincere.
I have been closely associated with him for many years and I knew him to be strictly truthful and honest, always considerate in his views, always giving others the same that he would reserve for himself.
Thomas A. Harris died on September 14, 1932 and his remains were laid to rest in the Davis cemetery in the Pine Grove community. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Floyd and a large concourse of friend and relatives attending.
