THe Calvert Family Arms of Calvert in Virginia - Sa. an inescutchon within an orb of Owls argent. Crest-a horned owl argent. The Calvert family, rpresented first in Virginia by Cornelius Calvert, of Princess Anne County, is from Lancaster, England. The arms of the family, as borne by Cornelius Calvert, are the same as the arms of the Caverly, and the similarity of arms and names leaves no doubt as to the similarity of origin. This family of Calverly is descended from Alphonsius Gospatrick, Lord of calverly, whose daughter, Lardiana, married John Scott, a Scotch gent. of note, who came to England in the suite of Lady Maud when that Princess married Henry ist of England. The arms of Scott were assumed and borne by their descendants, though the name of Calverly was adopted. This name by corruption became Calvert at a subsequent period and the family of Virginia Calverts is a branch. This is copied from the family records of Richard Taylor, Esq., Norfolk, VA. Cornelius Calvert,1st. He was Justice of Norfolk County from July 18, 179, to January 17, 1729-30. He was member of the Common Council of Norfolk Borough, and July 7, 1741, was appointed member of a committee to "form a Law" to prevent "all Persons being Servants or Slaves from Purchasing any Rum or Spirituous Liquors under Two Gallons." June 24, 1747, Mr. George Abyron and Mr. Nathaniel Portlock were appointed Common Council men in the room of Captain Cornelius Calvert, deceased, and Mr. Peter Dale, resigned. Cornelius Calvert married Mary Saunders, 29th of July, 1719, in Princess Anne County, VA. Their children were: 1wt. This is copied from the "Whole Duty of Man," in the Calvert family. The will of Cornelius Calvert, 1st, is dated 29th May, 1746, proved June 18th, 1747. His inventory was taken Jan. 20th, 1747-8. P692 Transcribed by David Bell 9/20/2004 note; I also have transcribed the bible of Cornelius Calvert dated 2003. note2: This family came from Lancaster, which is Lancashire Co, Engl. This would match the story of John D. Calvert and might explain why the DNA of the family lines doesn't match the DNA of PW Co Calverts. Also we have Maria Brower whose ancestor was a captain in MD, ends up in Greene County...She had married a White and it took quite a long time for her to sort just that much out. I found White and Calvert in SOmerset Co and it would be easy to envision crossing the Chesapeake and migrating up and down in ships and marrying and then she followed her husband to PA. She divorces and marries again. She is the Calvert. I need to get Maria's notes and forward that along. David and that is why I think we are related...I need a DNA sample from her line.

CAPT. CORNELIUS CALVERT of Lancaster, England married 29 July 1719 MARY SAUNDERS of Norfolk Co, VA. - 20 Oct 1762
Cornelius Calvert is said to have come to this country from Lancastershire, England, shortly before he was married. He was a sea captain in command of a vessel and married Mary Saunders July 27, 1719. They settled in Norfolk where he was "active and industrious" and his wife was "prudent and managing". They "soon made a clever little estate and he was enabled to leave off going to sea, though he still did business about vessels and had some concern in them...He used to employ his boys as soon as they were big enough, to carry stones to make land in the water. He owned, too...four valuable negroes who were good seamen and brought in good wages. Shortly after his marriage and before he left the sea, he made a voyage to England to see his mother, who, residing in some part of the country, received him with great kindness; but having now married a second husband, could not do much for him. However, on his being about to take leave of her, she accompanied him some miles, driving him in her chair, and when they came to the place where they must part, she said to him, 'My son, we are about to separate and I never expect to see you again in this world; I am sorry I have nothing to give you but this ball of yarn. Take it. It will serve you to mend your stockings when you get on board the ship. - I suppose you mend your stockings?- And mind, you must unwind it yourself'. So my grandfather took the ball and feeling it to be very heavy, when his mother left him, he was very anxious to find out what might be in it, and long before he got to the ship, unwound the ball and found, to his great joy and surprise, sixty solid gold guineas. After my grandfather left the sea and was growing old, he became (if he had not always been) very pious and was always reading his Bible and writing verses on it. Cornelius Calvert was a Justice of Norfolk County from July 18, 1729 to Jan. 17, 1729/30. He was a member of the Common Council of Norfolk Borough, and on July 7, 1741, was appointed a member of a committee to "form a law" to prevent "all Persons being Servants or Slaves ...from Purchasing any Rum or Spirituous Liquors under two gallons." His will was written on 29 May 1746 and was proved June 18, 1747 in Norfolk County, VA. He left his brother Joseph's daughter Mary, five pounds in his will.
Mary Saunders was born about 1700 in Princess Anne County, VA daughter of the Rev. Jonathan Saunders and Mary Bennett (widow Ewell). She died on 20 Oct 1762. Her will was dated Aug. 18, 1762 and proved Oct. 21, 1762 in Norfolk County, VA.

e-mail of interest "I recently acquired a book published in the middle of the 18th century which belonged to Samuel Calvert in 1774. It is signed by him and notes that he bought the book at auction for $10 Virginia currency. It also mentions the Brig Ariel. That is consistent with the subject matter of the book which is tariffs and other trade related matters. It seems very likely that this Samuel Calvert was involved in the maritime trade. He is probably the son of Cornelius and Mary and born in 1743. Atticus"

The Bounds of Joseph Land Begins at a Stone on the Back street joining to Capt John Hutchins Land and stable & runs from thence by the side of the said Hutchings's Land South Westerly 38 degrees or thereabouts) 81 foot to another stone; from thence South Easterly 45 degrees 74 foot to another stone; from thence North Easterly 44 degrees 81 foot to another stone on the back street; and from thence along the side of the said Street. I, Mary Calvert, sen. of the Borough of Norfolk, being at this time but in an indifferent State of Health, but of sound judgment and memory, and touching such Estate wherewith it has pleased the Almighty to bless me with in this life, I give & bequeath in manner & form following:
Impr. I give & bequeath to my Loving Son, Maxim. Calvert, one mourning ring, at the price of twenty-six Shillings Current money of Va.

NORFOLK -- The early 18th century family Bible of Cornelius Calvert, ancestor of many well known Tidewater Virginia families, is back on home ground again. The old volume, minus its cover and mouse-eaten around the edges, was spotted last July by Mrs. William B. Wingo, Norfolk genealogist and historian, at a tri-county exhibit staged by the Northeastern North Carolina historical societies of Pasquotank, Currituck and Perquimans counties.

LEADING CITIZEN
Calvert, the original owner, was one of Norfolk's leading pre-Revolutionary citizens. He was the father of a large family, most of whom married into other old Tidewater families and have many descendants living in and around Norfolk today. "When I saw the detailed Calvert family genealogy that the old man had entered on one of the flyleaves, I just knew that Bible didn't belong in North Carolina," Mrs. Wingo said. Returning home, she contacted her cousin, Mrs. Fanny Wilson Tardy, a descendant of Calvert, and they paid a visit to Mrs. Ethel Gregory Smith, the Bible's owner.

BOX OF BOOKS
From Mrs. Smith they learned the old volume was a part of a box of old books her father, the late John Luke Gregory, bought in Norfolk many years ago for $3. How the Calvert family Bible got in with them is still an
unsolved mystery. Although Mrs. Smith had promised the Bible to the Currituck County Historical Society, she agreed to let Mrs. Wingo and Mrs. Tardy have it in exchange for other Colonial relics. The old volume will be placed on loan to the Norfolk Museum on Feb. 2 at a meeting of the Great Bridge Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution of which Mrs. Wingo and Mrs. Tardy are members.

SHIP'S CAPTAIN
Cornelius Calvert, the original owner, was a native of Lancaster, England. Going to sea at an early age, he finally arrived in Norfolk as captain of a vessel. The first entry in the Bible records his marriage to Mary Saunders, daughter of the Rev. Jonathan Saunders of Princess Anne County on July 29, 1719. Cornelius and Mary Calvert had a succession of nine sons. Then the unexpected happened. When his daughter Mary, the tenth child was born, he wrote, "unlooked for" after the date of her birth.

I would also love to know if there is any connection between the Maryland Calverts and the Virginia Calverts... but, again, I don't have any documentation of it. We do, however, share the same Coat of Arms... and whether this was wishful thinking on someone's part many years ago, or because there was sound basis for the use of Coat of Arms, I don't know.
Most of the information that you found was researched by my grandmother in the 1950's. I am descended from the ninth child of Cornelius and Mary (Saunders) Calvert --- John Calvert. John and Peggy (Walke) Calvert's
daughter, Elizabeth married Richard Taylor. They were my Grandmother's great-grandparents.

This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!!

  CAPT. CORNELIUS CALVERT of Lancaster, England  married 29 July 1719  MARY SAUNDERS of  Norfolk Co, VA.  - 20 Oct 1762

   Cornelius Calvert is said to have come to this country from Lancastershire, England, shortly before he was married. He was a sea captain in command of a vessel and married Mary Saunders July 27, 1719. They settled in Norfolk where he was "active and industrious" and his wife was "prudent and managing". They "soon made a clever little estate and he was enabled to leave off going to sea, though he still did business about vessels and had some concern in them...He used to employ his boys as soon as they were big enough, to carry stones to make land in the water. He owned, too...four valuable negroes who were good seamen and brought in good wages. Shortly after his marriage and before he left the sea, he made a voyage to England to see his mother, who, residing in some part of the country, received him with great kindness; but having now married a second husband, could not do much for him. However, on his being about to take leave of her, she accompanied him some miles, driving him in her chair, and when they came to the place where they must part, she said to him, 'My son, we are about to separate and I never expect to see you again in this world; I am sorry I have nothing to give you but this ball of yarn. Take it. It will serve you to mend your stockings when you get on board the ship. - I suppose you mend your stockings?- And mind, you must unwind it yourself'. So my grandfather took the ball and feeling it to be very heavy, when his mother left him, he was very anxious to find out what might be in it, and long before he got to the ship, unwound the ball and found, to his great joy and surprise, sixty solid gold guineas. After my grandfather left the sea and was growing old, he became (if he had not always been) very pious and was always reading his Bible and writing verses on it. (From Memories of Mrs. Helen Maxwell-Read, entitled "My Mother", written from his mother's lips by the late William Maxwell). Published in "Lower Norfolk County, Va. Antiquary".

     Cornelius Calvert was a Justice of Norfolk County from July 18, 1729 to Jan. 17, 1729/30.  He was a member of the Common Council of Norfolk Borough, and on July 7, 1741, was appointed a member of a committee to "form a law" to prevent "all Persons being Servants or Slaves ...from Purchasing any Rum or Spirituous Liquors under two gallons." His will was written on 29 May 1746 and was proved June 18, 1747 in Norfolk County, VA.  He left his brother Joseph's daughter Mary, five pounds in his will.

          Mary Saunders was born about 1700 in Princess Anne County, VA  daughter of the Rev. Jonathan Saunders and Mary Bennett (widow Ewell). She died on 20 Oct 1762.  Her will was dated Aug. 18, 1762 and proved Oct. 21, 1762 in Norfolk County, VA.

That is consistent with the subject matter of the book which is tariffs and other trade related matters.  It seems very likely that this Samuel Calvert was involved in the maritime trade. He is probably the son of Cornelius and Mary and born in 1743. Atticus"

  The Bounds of Maximillian's Land, Begins at a stone on the north east side of the Front street (which stone lies on the dividing Line between Capt John Hutchings's Land and mine) Running from thence north easterly 38 Degrees (or thereabouts) 150 foot to another stone, from thence South Easterly 45 degrees 74 foot to another stone; from thence South Westerly 44 degrees 102 foot to another stone; from thence South Easterly 45 degrees 12 foot to another stone; from thence South Westerly 40 degrees 47 foot to another stone on the north East side of the Front street and from thence along the side of the said Street North Westerly 45 degrees 79 foot to the first Station.

  The Bounds of Cornelius's Land, Begins at a stone on the north East side of the Front street (which stone is 79 foot on the said Street from Capt.   The Bounds of Joseph Land Begins at a Stone on the Back street joining to Capt John Hutchins Land and stable & runs from thence by the side of the said Hutchings's Land South Westerly 38 degrees or thereabouts) 81 foot to another stone; from thence South Easterly 45 degrees 74 foot to another stone; from thence North Easterly 44 degrees 81 foot to another stone on the back street; and from thence along the side of the said Street. Will of Mary Saunders Calvert, widow of Cornelius Calvert 1st: 

   In the name of God, amen, &c. I, Mary Calvert, sen. of the Borough of Norfolk, being at this time but in an indifferent State of Health, but of sound judgment and memory, and touching such Estate wherewith it has pleased the Almighty to bless me with in this life, I give & bequeath in manner & form following:

  Impr. I give & bequeath to my Loving Son, Maxim. Calvert, one mourning ring, at the price of twenty-six Shillings Current money of Va.

  Item. I give & bequeath to my beloved Son, Cornelius Calvert, one mourning ring, at the price of twenty-six Shillings Current money.

  Item. I give & bequeath to Eliza. Calvert and Sarah Calvert, Daughters of my Son Thomas Calvert, twenty pounds current to be equally divided.

  Item. I give & bequeath to my beloved sons Thomas Calvert, Saunders Calvert, Joseph Calvert, William Calvert, Chris. Calvert, John Calvert, & Sam'l Calvert, to be divided among them, share & share alike all the cash & moneys that shall at my Decease be found in my House, also the sums of money that shall be then owing to me when collected (after paying all my just Debts and Funeral charges, and the moneys belonging to my deceased Husband's Estate is made up and set apart agreeable to his last will) to them & each of them, their & their heirs forever.

  Item. I give and Bequeath one Pew in this our Church of Norfolk to my daughter Mary Lawson, to my son Cornelius Calvert and to my seven sons, Thomas Calvert, Saunders Calvert, Joseph Calvert, William Calvert, Christ. Calvert, John Calvert, and Sam'1 Calvert, to them, and their heirs forever.

  Item. My will & Desire is that my Executors, hereafter named, do set up for sale my Clock, three feather beds, and Furniture, Tables, Chairs, Chests, Pewter, Brass, Iron, & every other thing found in my Dwelling House and Kitchen not already or hereafter given, and the moneys arising there from to be equally divided among my said Seven sons, Thomas Calvert, Saunders Calvert, Joseph Calvert, William Calvert, Christopher Calvert, John Calvert, and Sam'1 Calvert, share & share alike to them and epch of them or their & each of their heirs forever.

  Item. I give and bequeath to my Seven sons, Thomas Calvert, Saunders Calvert, Joseph Calvert, William Calvert, Christ. Calvert, Jno. Calvert and Sam'l Calvert, one molatto wench called Jenny, with her Boy Child called John, as also her the said Jenny's offspring of her Body hereafter to be sold at my Decease and to be equally divided among them and to each of them, their and each of their Heirs forever.

  Item. I give to my beloved daughter, Mary Lawson, all my wearing apparel that shall be found in my House at my decease to her and her heirs forever.

  Item. I give & bequeath to my beloved son, Sam'1 Calvert, one pair of Gold Sleeve Buttons marked E. C. and one Silver Punch Ladle, to him and his heirs forever.

  Item. I do appoint and ordain that my beloved Sons, Maximillian Calvert and Cornelius Calvert, Executors of this my last will & Testament; also my desire is that the Sum of money given & bequeathed to my son Samuel Calvert by his deceased Father in his last will & Testament may be put out to Interest until demanded by my said son Samuel Calvert when at nineteen years of age.

  Item. I do hereby revoke and disannul all former wills. Testaments & Legacies, ratifying & confirming this and no other to be my Last will & Testament.

       CALVERT FAMILY BIBLE FOUND IN EASTERN N.C.

NORFOLK -- The early 18th century family Bible of Cornelius Calvert, ancestor of many well known Tidewater Virginia families, is back on home ground again. The old volume, minus its cover and mouse-eaten around the edges, was spotted last July by Mrs. William B. Wingo, Norfolk genealogist and historian, at a tri-county exhibit staged by the Northeastern North Carolina historical societies of Pasquotank, Currituck and Perquimans counties.

LEADING CITIZEN

Calvert, the original owner, was one of Norfolk's leading pre-Revolutionary citizens. He was the father of a large family, most of whom married into other old Tidewater families and have many descendants living in and around Norfolk today. "When I saw the detailed Calvert family genealogy that the old man had entered on one of the flyleaves, I just knew that Bible didn't belong in North Carolina," Mrs. Wingo said. Returning home, she contacted her cousin, Mrs. Fanny Wilson Tardy, a descendant of Calvert, and they paid a visit to Mrs. Ethel Gregory Smith, the Bible's owner.

BOX OF BOOKS

From Mrs. Smith they learned the old volume was a part of a box of old books her father, the late John Luke Gregory, bought in Norfolk many years ago for $3. How the Calvert family Bible got in with them is still an

unsolved mystery. Although Mrs. Smith had promised the Bible to the Currituck County Historical Society, she agreed to let Mrs. Wingo and Mrs. Tardy have it in exchange for other Colonial relics. The old volume will be placed on loan to the Norfolk Museum on Feb. 2 at a meeting of the Great Bridge Chapter of the

Daughters of the American Revolution of which Mrs. Wingo and Mrs. Tardy are members.

SHIP'S CAPTAIN

Cornelius Calvert, the original owner, was a native of Lancaster, England. Going to sea at an early age, he finally arrived in Norfolk as captain of a vessel. The first entry in the Bible records his marriage to Mary Saunders, daughter of the Rev. Jonathan Saunders of Princess Anne County on July 29, 1719. Cornelius and Mary Calvert had a succession of nine sons. Then the unexpected happened. When his daughter Mary, the tenth child was born, he wrote, "unlooked for" after the date of her birth.
