John Calvert of Gursney County, OH: Descendents - Tulsa,
Oklahoma, Aug 28, 1991 by Johnie and Billie Holman. Of Tulsa
Oklahoma, Transcribed by David Edwin Bell

The history of this line of the Calvert Family has been a difficult one
to put together. It has required many hours of Researching US
Census records, County Courthouse Records, Funeral home and
Cemetery records. We have traveled many miles, visited with as
many of the oldest descendants we could locate, and traipsing
through every Cemetery where this family lived, and slowly piece this
brief family history together. Our family charts are not complete as
you will note, but we have sure worked to make them as complete as
possible

We want to give special thanks to so of those who gave us a lot of
very helpful information; Blanche E Calvert Kline, a granddaughter of
Aaron and Elizabeth, who lives at Knoxville, IA. Harry Calvert a great
grandson of Aaron and Elizabeth, and a nephew to Blanch who lives
at Tracy, IA. LaVerne Calvert Roberts, a granddaughter of Aaron and
Elizabeth, now deceased. Corwin Cornell Calvert, A grandson of
Aaron and Elizabeth, and a brother of LaVerne's who lives in Tulsa
OK.

It is our hope that any who read this History and examine the family
charts, and can make corrections or additions to it, will write us their
information at the address shown above. We will appreciate any
help that can be given.

The Calvert Family of Gurnsey County, Ohio

John Calvert, B PA 1777 and wife Mary, born in PA 1788 moved their
family into Gurnsey Co Ohio in the early 1800s. One of their sons,
John, was born in Pennsylvania 1810; he married a Mary ? who was
born in Maryland in 1790.

One of John Calvert Jr. and Mary's sons was Aaron born in Gurnsey
County, Ohio in 1832; he married Elizabeth M. McCully, born in Ohio
1832 about 1851. Elizabeth was a daughter of Gilbert and Julie
McCully and the granddaughter of James and Elizabeth McCully. Her
father Gilbert was born in Virginia 1806 and her mother Julie in
Maryland in 1810. Both her grandparents were born in Ireland in
1773. (see chart, Page Ca2).

Aaron and Elizabeth had 5 sons while they lived in Ohio (there is a
skip in the birth years from April 28, 1853 to May 5, 1857. This seems
to indicate the loss of at least one child most likely between 1853 and
1860; the interpretation of Census data gives this indication. the
census of July 20, 1860, when the family lived near Cambridge, Ohio
is an example via the births and ages of the children.

The family removed to Illinois by October 1866 where their 6th son
James Elmer Calvert was born. In June of 1870 they lived at Norwood,
in Mercer County, Illinois Northeast of Galesburg. Their son Gilbert
Elsworth Calvert said the family lived at Galesburg. In June of 1880
they lived in Oxford Twp. of Henry Co, Illinois. About 1885 they moved
the family to the township of What Cheer Vicinity which is in the
Vicinity of Keokuk, Iowa. Aaron was a coal miner, as were the other
Calvert men of this family.

Aaron died on 28 Oct 1886 and was buried in the Highland Cemetery
of What Cheer. On of Aaron's great Grandsons, Harry Calvert, said
he was told that Aaron died in a coal mine accident at the age of 54.
When Harry was a young boy, he was taken to Aaron's Grave by his
grandfather Gilbert Elsworth Calvert, who may have been the one
who passed down the story of the mine accident.

Family researchers are not certain of the death date of Elizabeth
McCully Calvert who probably lived with some of her sons after
Aaron's death. She signed for the marriage of her youngest son
Thomas Aaron when he married his first wife, Helen Drury, in
Oskaloosa, Iowa on 24 Nov, 1888. Elizabeth was probably living with
Thomas Aaron, whose first wife Helen died in 1893. He then married
Mary Griffiths in Appanoose Co, Iowa, on 17 Apr, 1895. The marriage
record in Centerville Iowa indicates that the ceremony took place in
the home of Jane Calvert. It is unknown to our family who this Jane
Calvert was or if there was a relationship between the Descendents
of John Calvert and this Jane Calvert. There are no "Janes" in the
Calvert Families of Gurnsey, Ohio to which this study is addressed.
Some have postulated that this Jane Calvert may have been
Elizabeth (Jane), Aaron¡¦s mother. We believe Elizabeth died between
the time of that wedding and the taking of the Census of 1900. She is
buried at What Cheer, Iowa, in Highland Cemetery beside her
husband Aaron. (See the family group Chart on page Ca3).

The oldest son of Aaron and Elizabeth Calvert, John F. Calvert, was
born in Ohio, 28 Apr 1853. When he obtained the age of majority, he
lived in Illinois when his parents moved to Iowa. He married Kate
Hawks, born in IL in 1854 at Knoxville on 22 Aug 1872. They lived in
the Aledo, IL Vicinity until 1895/6 when John F. moved his family into
Oklahoma Indian Territory. In Jun 1900 Census, they lived at Tiawah,
IT southeast of Claremore. On 26 Apr 1910 they lived in Lynn Lane
Twp of Tulsa Co. Kate died 24 July 1913 when the couple lived at
Lynn Lane, apparently. In 1916 Aaron (s/b John) moved to 2404 E.
9th Street. At the time of Aaron's (s/b John¡¦s) death on the 29th of
April, 1929, he was living at 4312 S. Rockford in Tulsa.
(See chart Ca4 on page 10).

The Second son of Aaron and Elizabeth Calvert was Moses Calvert,
born Ohio 5 May 1857; he married Lucy E. Hawks, a sister of Kate
Hawks Calvert, in Knoxville on 16 October, 1875. He moved his
family to Iowa when his parents migrated. He and Lucy made their
home about 5 miles south of Oskaloosa, at Muchachinock, Iowa. He
spent the rest of his life in the Oskaloosa Vicinity. Lucy died 17
October 1927, and Moses on 10 February, 1941. Both were buried
at Hamilton, Iowa where Thomas Aaron Calvert was buried in
February of 1914. Some of Moses descendants still live in the Des
Moines Iowa area. One of the Descendent so of Moses and Lucy
owned a Real Estate Brokerage. (see the chart for the family group
on page Ca4).

William Calvert, the third son of Aaron and Elizabeth, was born in
Ohio in June of 1859. He married Adda McClary, who was born in
Pennsylvania in July 1866. The marriage took place at Oskaloosa
Iowa on 7 January, 1888. Adda was a daughter of Charles and June
McClary. William worked in the coal mines for several years, living in
Bluff Creek Township of Monroe County, Iowa. In June of 1900. By
April of 1810 the family was living in Liberty Township of Marion
County. William later moved the family to Kansas City, Missouri
where he owned a drug store. (see Chart for Family Group on page
Ca5).

Gilbert Elsworth Calvert, the fourth son of Aaron and Elizabeth, was
born in Cambridge Ohio, 6 May 1862. At Aledo Illinois, on 11
November, 1882, he married Augusta Louise Clatt who was born in
Iowa in August of 1865. He may have been the first Calvert of this line
to move to Iowa. In June 1900 he lived in the W. 1&1/2 (Section?) of
Liberty Township of Marion County. He too was a Coal Miner, but quit
the mines and became a farmer, settling down at Tracy, Iowa. He died
there on 23 September, 1939. Augusta died in 1954. They are both
buried in the Bellfountain Cemetery at Tracy. His obituary
(transcribed) is available in this Document. Attachment 1: Gilbert
Elsworth Calvert - Obituary, Part 1 and his son, Gilbert E. Calvert -
Obituary, Part 2.

As noted, all of these Calverts were coal miners, and the other sons
of Aaron and Elizabeth McCully Calvert married their respective
spouses between Jan 7, 1886 and November 24, 1888. They lived in
the area near each other in coal mining towns of Mahaska, Monroe,
Marion, and Appanoose Counties, Iowa and most of the children of
these Calvert families were born in these Coal mining locales. Today,
the location of most of these mining towns is not apparent. Many were
destroyed in the process of the implementing of strip Mines. These
towns, similar to Oil Boom towns grew and disappeared in a short
period of History. Strip mining replace Shaft Mines in the late 1800s
and early 19th century, as technology made possible easier and
safer Mining methods where coal is found near the surface of the
earth.

Grant Ullysis(Ulysses?) Calvert, the 5th son of Aaron and Elizabeth
Calvert, was born in Ohio in 1865 and married first, Sadie Sedwick at
Oskaloosa, Iowa on 3 July, 1888. Family research indicates that there
were no children of this marriage. In 1901, at Oskaloosa, Grant
married second, Mary E. Carter who was born in Iowa in 1881. Some
time after the birth of Grant and Mary's first child, daughter Gladys M.
on 14 August 1910 the family was at Andersonville and Grant was
working the same mine as his youngest brother Thomas Aaron
Calvert when a mine explosion occurred. Thomas died from the burns
received in the explosion at Andersonville Mine on 10 February,
1914. (See Chart Ca6 for Grant and Mary's family group).

James Elmer Calvert, the sixth son of Aaron and Elizabeth Calvert,
was born in Illinois in October of 1866. In about 1887 he married Mary
Ann Gott who was born in Ohio in October 1870. On 10 February,
1914, when his brother Thomas Aaron was killed, James and Mary
lived at Enterprise, the former name of the town of Beacon, Mahaska
County, Iowa. Later, they moved their family to Des Moines. In
September 1939 when Gilbert E. Calvert died, James Elmer was living
in Los Angeles, California. (see chart Ca6 for James and Elizabeth's
family group).

Thomas Aaron, the seventh and last son of Aaron and Elizabeth, was
born in Gilcrest, Illinois on 27 April 1869. On 24 November, 1888 he
married Helen Drury in Oskaloosa. Helen was born in Maryland in
1870. Thomas and Helen had two daughters, Lola, Born in Iowa in
1890 and Mary, Born in Iowa, date unknown at this time. The family
was told that Thomas was mean to Helen, and in 1893, after he had
treated her badly; she went out in a bad rain storm, walked along the
railroad track in the heavy rain before returning home. She caught
pneumonia and died. It is not known what happened to daughter
Mary who is untraced (see comment in Thomas Aaron's Obituary
about Mary). It is possible that Helen's parents took her as she was a
baby, but Lola remained with Thomas and was raised with his second
family.

On 17 April 1895, in Appanoose County, Iowa, Thomas married Eliza
Mary Griffiths who as born at Braidwood, Illinois on 30 August, 1875.
Eliza Mary had a daughter, Ann born 28 Dec 1894 by a previous
marriage. The family has been told that Ann was the daughter of
Charles Gott, who was Eliza Mary's first husband and that Thomas
was a step-father to Ann.

Eliza Mary was a daughter of Thomas R. Griffiths and Martha
Mathews, both born in Cardiff, Wales. The Griffiths family came to
America in 1869, settling in Kewanne township of Henry County,
Illinois, where they lived in the house #550 at least by 1 Sep 1870.
The Calverts were living in the next county, Mercer, at Norwood in
Surrey Township House #148 by 20 Jun 1870 (dates and locales via
Census of 1870).
The Griffith family is shown in the Griffith Family History.

Thomas Aaron and Eliza Mary lived in Chisolm, Everest, Buxton and
Andersonville while Thomas worked the Coal mines. They had eight
Children, five girls and three boys. Thomas had a drinking problem
which caused a lot of unhappiness in his family and many arguments
with Eliza Mary. She was a little bundle of TNT, being only 4'10" tall
and she never weighed more than 85 Pounds. When Thomas came
home drunk, after spending most of his pay check, Eliza Mary would
"light into him." Thomas was killed from an explosion at the
Andersonville Coal mind and died of burns on 10 Feb, 1914. The
Knoxville Express carried the story. See Attachment 2: Express
Article: Andersonville Mine Explosion.

After the death of Thomas Aaron Calvert, Eliza Mary moved her
family to Hamilton, Iowa. In order to support her family, she made and
sold bread, washed clothes on a scrub board, then ironed them for
her neighbors. Her youngest son, Corwin C. Calvert, remembers
when his mother bought her first automatic washing machine, since
he was the automatic part of the washing chore. Eliza Mary drew $28
per month in pension from the death of her husband Thomas. Her
daughters Martha and Mary worked in Des Moines as Telephone
Operators, to help support the family, and son Grant worked in the
mines. On 2 July 1923, Eliza Mary moved her family to Taylorville,
Illinois. Her oldest Brother, William J. Griffiths, lived there and had a
grocery store. William let Margaret and Thomas work in the store.
Grant worked at a creamery. Eliza Mary continued to make and sell
bread and do washing and ironing to care for her family. In April or
May of 1927, Grant Calvert moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work in the
Coal Mines there, bringing Margaret, Thomas and LaVerne with him.
Grant made a trip back east some where in the fall of 1927 and in
November, 1927 returned through Taylorville and talked his mother
into bringing the rest of the family to Tulsa. There, On Nov 27th, the
family was reunited.

Eliza Mary Griffiths had two sisters, Margaret Ann, born January,
1878 at Braidwood, Illinois and Charlotte G. born December, 1879,
also in Braidwood. Both sisters married Calvert Brothers who were
Nephews of Thomas Aaron.

Margaret Ann married Fred Calvert on 12 February, 1896 at
Gilchrest, Illinois. Fred and Margaret Ann Griffiths Calvert came to
Oklahoma, Indian Territory with Fred's father, John F. Calvert,
between 1896 and June 1900 living near John F. when the June,
1900 Census. Fred and Margaret Ann had five children, three sons
and two daughters.

Their oldest child, Eugene, was born in Indian Territory on 23
February, 1901. Some time later, the family moved to Iowa for a
period of time where their second son, Freddie was born at Bluff

Iowa on 22 March, 1911. The family returned to Oklahoma where son
David was born on 17 January, 1911 and the last child, Beatrice, was
born on 29 January, 1917. Fred Sr. died on December 2nd, 1923. He
is buried at Oaklawn Cemetery as is Margaret who died on April 6th,
1945.

Charlotte G. Griffiths married Ira Calvert on 18 May, 1903 in
Oklahoma, IT. Ira and Charlotte had seven children. Their first son
Edward was born in Eddysville, Iowa on 8 September, 1900. Daughter

December, 1906; True Winsor, 26 December, 1909; Ira "Pus" Calvert
was born in 1911, and the last child Nellie, was born August 5, 1915.
Nellie always and a problem and has spent most of her life in special
homes where she could have special supervision. She was in a home
in Enid, Oklahoma for many years, and today is in a nursing home in
Locust Grove, Oklahoma, the same home where Lizzie Calvert
housed. Charlotte G. Griffiths Calvert died Aug 1923 and Ira in
October, 1931 (Their family is shown on page Ca4a).

When Eliza Mary came to Tulsa in November, 1927, she married her
brother-in-law, Ira Calvert. Ira and Eliza Mary lived for some time at
Rugby Colorado where Ira worked in a mine. They came back to
Tulsa for about a year, and then returned to Colorado. Ira died in
October 1931, and was buried by his first wife Charlotte, in
Claremore, Oklahoma, Oaklawn Cemetery; daughter Emily aided in
the Burial. Ira and Charlotte do not have tombstones.

Eliza Mary remained in Tulsa after this time for the rest of her life and

Myrtle, born September, 1913, followed by a son Spencer, born
about 1914 also in Valley Junction. Lola and Richard later live in
California where Lola probably died (though this is uncertain).

Eliza Mary's daughter Ann, never spoke well of her step-father
Thomas Aaron and often said she was glad he was not her father
(polite?). Ann was 19 when Thomas died and knew him quite well. On
28 December 1912, the day she turned 18, she married Timothy
McVeitty, of Scottish descent, a son of Robert and Hanna McVeitty.
Timothy (Tim) was born at What Cheer, Iowa on 1 November, 1891.

they were living at Bartonville, Illinois. Tim worked at the Treasure
Coal Co. from 1934 to 1954 and was custodian at Bradley University
for twelve years. Ann died 13 November, 1981 at Bartonville. (See
the family Chart for Ann and Tim Ca7a).

oldest daughter of Thomas Aaron and Eliza Mary Griffith Calvert. In
the early 1920's she married Willard Findt, in Des Moines Iowa, where
they lived for a period of time on West Grand Avenue. Matt's younger
brother, Corwin C. (Corkey) stayed with them at one point, when he
was seven years old in about 1921. Martha and Willard moved to
Taylorville when Eliza Mary moved there in 1923. Willard was putting
Chains on his car and was killed when another motorist hit him, near
Taylorville about ???. He was traveling for a company and putting the
chains on to go down a snow covered dirt road when he was hit and
killed. On 1 May, 1930, Matt Married Lee Rotramel, in Claremore,
Oklahoma. Lee was born in 1893. They lived at Collonsville,
Oklahoma in a flat at an old Brick Yard (name unknown). Matt died 11
December, 1979 in Tulsa and is buried at Memorial Cemetery. She
had no children. As a young girl she worked on a farm at Tracy, Iowa,

Everest, Iowa 13 Apr 1899. She came to Oklahoma before her family
left Hamilton Iowa and married her double cousin Edward Calvert on
10 May 1920. Ed was a grandson of Mary's uncle John F. Calvert,

Mary Calvert, was born in Buxton, Iowa on 24 June, 1908. He was
named after his father. In 1927 he came to Tulsa with the rest of his
family, and like the other Calverts, he was a coal miner. According to
his wife, Tom worked for the Andrew Adamson Coal Co in
underground mines. On 14 November, 1932, Thomas was working
with his brother Grant for the Johnn level Coal Co. in a strip mine. An
accidental explosion killed Grant and Thomas lost his hearing in one
ear as a result. He then went to work in the Shipyards on the West

west). Thomas worked in sheet metal and Bille G. Holliday worked as
a painters helper. On 14 November, 1942, Tom and Billie were
married in Vancouver, WA. In 1947, they returned to Oklahoma and
lived at Dawson where they bought a Mobile Gas station from Ed
Calvert. The station was located on Tecumseh Street where they also
bought a bar in 1953. Billie G was born in Taney County, Missouri on
23 October, 1910. Tom had emphysema from his work in the coal
mines and Billie tried to get him to apply for black lung pension but
Tom did not want to do so. Billie applied for him and after much hard
work, a pension was obtained. Billie now draws ($338) per month of
that pension. The pension back pay was about $6,000. Tom died 6
February, 1980. They couple had no children. .

Augusta Laverne Calvert, the last daughter of Thomas and Eliza
Mary, was born in Everest Iowa on 25 February, 1911. She was
named after her Uncle Gilbert E. Calvert's wife, August L. Clatt. She
came to Tulsa once or twice, from Taylorville to visit her sister Mary
E. Calvert and husband Ed Calvert before she and her husband
moved their family to Tulsa in 1927. One day while she was hanging
clothes on the clothesline for Mary, she saw a young man digging a
ditch in a neighbor¡¦s yard. This young man thought Laverne was very
pretty. The young man's name was Earl Hallie Roberts, born in
Visalia, CA on 16 March, 1910, a son of William (Bill) and Rosa
Walker Roberts. A courtship was started which lead to the marriage
of LaVerne and Earl Hallie Roberts, in Tulsa, Oklahoma on 24 July,
1928. The story of their family is included in the "Roberts family
History" (see the chart for this family group on Charts Ca7 and R3c).

Corwin Cornell Calvert, named after the Doctor who delivered him is
the last child of Thomas A and Eliza Mary. He was born in
Andersonville Iowa on 15 July, 1923. Corwin was only 7 months old
when his father was killed. He does not know when his mother moved
with the family to Hamilton though he does he recall going to Tracy
Iowa with his sister Matt(Martha) who was working on their Uncle Gib's
farm. This was about when Corwin was 5 or 6 years old (1918-19). He
does recall Matt visiting along with her husband Willard Findt in 1920
at the time he was 7. They lived on West Grand Ave in Des Moines.
He was 9 when the family moved to Taylorville, Illinois on July 2nd or
3rd, 1923. He said that his mother sold bread to people in Hamilton,
and did washing and ironing. He remembered when his mother
bought a foot operated washing machine which he had to do the
treadle while his mother washed clothes. In Taylorville his brother
Grant worked for a creamery and Thomas and Margaret worked in
their Uncle William J. Griffiths' grocery store. He lived some with Uncle
William's oldest son, Thomas R. Griffiths and his wife Bessie Hall
Griffiths. He helped them on their farm and they wanted to adopt him
but he and his mother said no. He came to Oklahoma on November
27, 1927 with his mother, sister and brother Grant. He lived with some
of his relatives, off and on, and did some beaching with his brother
Grant, and a cousin Dave Calvert. In 1932 while living with his sister
LaVerne and Brother-in-Law Earl Hallie Roberts on their farm near
Coweta, he met Florene Edith Easley on her 14th birthday. They
started a romance, often double dating with Florene's brother
Wayman, which led to their marriage in Tulsa on 25 August, 1934.
They have lived in Tulsa where Corwin (Corkey) worked for the
Daughtery Ice Plant on Admiral Place. Corkey helped rebuild the
plant, and then delivered Ice from about 1935 until 1940. He worked
at Spartan Aircraft from 1940 to 1945 and then worked for Earl Hallie
Roberts for awhile, painting cars in Hallies garage. He then decided
to work for himself, and since 1945 has been employed as a house
painter to the date of this writing some of his longtime customers
won't let him retire. He is also quite the golfer and plays a good game.
(See the family group on Chart Ca7 and Ca7b).

ON 30 August, 1992, a Calvert reunion was held at Tulsa Oklahoma.
Sam A. Calvert, son of John E. Calvert and Grandson of John F.
Calvert told us the following story passed to him by his father. About
1916 or 1917 John F. was contacted by lawyers handling the estate
of Lord Baltimore Calvert. They asked him to go to Baltimore for the
settlement of the estate. John F.'s Remarks were: "I don't owe them
anything and they owe me nothing" so he did not go. Then in 1937
John E. Calvert received a letter from attorneys on the same Estate
Settlement. The lawyer said the Attorney fee's and etc had used up
most of the money still in the Estate, and if he would meet with them
in Baltimore they would try to make a settlement. Jack went was given
a settlement of about $4,000. He returned to Tulsa and bought some
vehicles. That was a lot of money at the end of those depression
years.

The above story is similar to one we had been told by older Calverts
here in OK and others in Iowa. Their story was that the Calvert
brothers had been contacted by Lawyers trying to settle the estate
and were looking for a Calvert family with 7 sons and 1 daughter.
Since there was no girl in the family, they did not think they were the
Calverts that they (the attorneys) were looking for. Please note the
birthdates of the 7 Calvert sons and a gap of 4 years between John
F. and Moses. The others were all born 2 years apart. There could
have been a girl born about 1855 who died before the 1860 Census.

Burned to Death! -News Article Thomas Calvert - part 1

AWFUL ACCIDENT IN ANDERSONVILL MINE LAST WEEK.

Thomas Calvert struck his head against the roof and his lamp fell into
a keg of powder.

Another fatal accident occurred near Knoxville last week. Thomas A.
Calvert, a miner employed at the Anderson shaft, southeast of the
city, opened a keg of blasting powder in the mine. As he straighten
up his head struck the roof, his lighted lamp was dislodged from his
cap and fell into the open keg. When the other men appraised that
something had happened, by the rush of smoke down the entries and
in the rooms, they came to seek the cause, and found Mr. Calvert,
nearly all his clothing burned from his body and his face and all
exposed flesh blackened by the smoke.

He was at once taken from the mine and his injuries dressed. It was
apparent however, that he could not live long, and on Tuesday
Morning he became comatose and about 10 o'clock that night he
passed away.

Thomas Aaron Calvert was born April 27 1869, in Mercer County, IL
and died Feb 10, 1914, near Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, being
44 years, 9 months and 13 days old. In 1875 he came with his
parents to Iowa, settling near Oskaloosa, where he remained until he
was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Druary (entered here as shown
by author) in 1889. She died in 1893. To this union were born two
children, Mrs. Clyde L. Krouse of Valley Junction, and Miss Mary
Calvert, of Kewanee, IL. In 1895 he married Liza M. Griffiths. Eight
children were born to their union (Note: It was 1885 when the Culverts
moved from IL to IA).

He leaves to morn his departure a wife, ten children, a stepdaughter
(Mrs. McVitty) and six brothers. The brothers are John Calvert of
Tulsa, Moses, Oscaloosa, William, Enterprise; Gilbert, Tracy; Grant,
Kline Montana; James, Enterprise. Besides these there are a host of
friends to morn his loss.

A mine workers' service was held at his home at Andersonvile mine,
Friday evening, the 13th, Rev. Hamilton of Attica, preaching. On
Saturday, services were held at Hamilton, Rev. Moor of Tracy,
preaching. Burial was made at Hamilton Cemetery, the miners having
a part in the service.

Awful Accident at Anderson Mine

Miner dropped lamp in full keg of powder and dies --Clothing burned
off body

(The Knoxville Journal, on Thursday, Feb 12, 1914 carried this article)

Lived from Monday afternoon till Tuesday evening -- leaves widow
and children.

The second frightful mine accident of the week in Knoxville township
occurred at the Anderson Mine Shaft about 3:00 O'clock Monday
afternoon, when Thomas Calvert was fatally burned by the powder
explosion. He died at 11 o'clock Tuesday night after about 32 hours
of agony resulting from the burns to his face, neck and body, the
heat and poisonous fumes inhaled into his lungs.

Mr. Calvert, who was an old time experience miner, and once pit boss
at Everest, appears to have invited his fate by doing the very
unreasonable act of opening a keg of powder with a pit lamp hanging
to the cap upon his head. After the keg had been opened, he made a
move by which his head came in contact with the roof of the mine,
knocking the lamp into the open full keg of powder. This statement is
not guess-work, but is from a declaration made by the man after the
accident, when he was still perfectly rational and was given an
explanation of the accident.

The first that was known by the men in the mine in regard to the
explosion was the rush of air and smoke down the entryways and into
the rooms, there being scarcely any detonation whatever.
Investigations traced the source of the trouble to Mr. Calvert's room
where the frightfully burned man was groping around in his bare feet
with his clothing practically all burned or torn from his body, his face,
neck arms and hands black from the burning and the smoke.

Willing hands removed, the man from the mine to his home in
Anderson village as quickly as possible and everything within the
power of physicians was done to save his life. He remained perfectly
conscious until Tuesday morning and then gradually lapsed into a
condition of insensibility which continued until death came to his relief.

We have been requested to correct the report that the man's eyes
were blown out. They were scarcely injured in the least. Most of the
burns were on the neck, side of the face, hands and arms. Some of
the miners declared that his shoes were undoubtedly blown off by the
explosion; others are of the opinion that the man took them off to
relieve burns about the ankles.

Deceased was 58 years old and leaves a widow and ten children. He
was a brother of James Calvert, Mine boss at Enterprise, and also of
William Calvert, superintendent at the Buxton mines. (Note: he was
only 44 years, 11 months and 13 days old when he died).

Isaac b 1791 who married Jane Cotton -- David Bell ~ ~
